for my brides | HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

I’ve photographed hundreds of weddings over the last seven years and being a part of that many weddings, I’ve pretty much seen it all. When talking to my brides about their wedding day these little things come up often so I thought I’d share them here!

1. MINIMIZE STRESS

Some tips on this can be found by visiting my advice on how to have a stress-free wedding day…a happy, stress-free bride is absolutely the most important part of having great photos :)

2. ALLOW TIME FOR PHOTOS

…Can we get photos of the bride & groom, wedding party & family in 20 minutes? Yes. Will it be rushed and not very fun for you? Yes. The ideal schedule for wedding photos is for our couples to do a first look and allow 90 minutes for photos of the bride & groom, wedding party & family. Allowing for a relaxed timeline that gives plenty of time for all the different elements of your day makes for a happy bride, happy guests and happy photos :)

3. GET READY SOMEWHERE AWESOME

…your wedding day is once in a lifetime. The time that you spend getting ready for your wedding is a big deal. You want to be somewhere beautiful, relaxing and with enough room for all your bridesmaids, the moms and other girls who will spend the morning with you. Trying to fit every one in a crowded space can make things chaotic. And this, of all things, I cannot say enough times. Get ready somewhere that has natural light. A simple, beautiful room with nice windows. Whether it’s in a home or a hotel room, trust me when I say the mood of the day is set in this room. And don’t stick the boys in the basement, photos of them matter too :)

4. BRING THE DETAILS

…the shoes, the dress, the jewelry, the rings, the garter, your grandmother’s hanky, the invitation, the bouquet…bring all these little details with you to the room where you are getting ready. When we come in to begin getting ready photos we start with photographing all these things to begin your story. And be nice to your dress with a pretty hanger, she deserves it :) Something like these awesome personalized hangers or a just a nice wooden or silk one.

5. REMEMBER THE LIGHT

…we all look our best in pretty light. That hour before sunset known as magic hour gives some of the best photos. If the day’s schedule doesn’t allow for doing all the portraits during this time, consider taking 5 or 10 minutes with your groom to step away from everything and just be together. Nothing shows love like nice, soft, warm light!

6. LIGHT YOUR RECEPTION

…what makes the biggest difference between a pretty reception and a breathtaking, dramatically beautiful reception? Lighting. Candles, up lighting, chandeliers, dance floor lighting. Along with all your other decorations, consider the lighting. It can make all the difference in the feel of your celebration.

7. HIRE A PROFESSIONAL HAIR & MAKE-UP ARTIST

…professional hair & make-up artists understand the difference between an every day look and what you’ll want and need on your wedding day from longevity to how it shows in photos. You’ll have these photos for the rest of your life and you want to look your absolute best!
